Lake Fork

Located east of Dallas in Wood County, Lake Fork is a legendary destination for trophy largemouth bass. The lake has produced more ShareLunker-class bass (13 lbs or heavier) than any other body of water in the country. Submerged timber, abundant hydrilla, and careful management by TPWD create ideal conditions for growing big bass.

  • Best technique: Slow-rolling swimbaits, flipping jigs into timber, topwater lures at dawn
  • Tip: Hire a local guide for your first trip — knowing the timber structure is half the battle

Sam Rayburn Reservoir

At over 114,000 acres, "The Ray" is the largest lake entirely within Texas. It offers excellent fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish, and its sheer size means you can almost always find productive water regardless of pressure or weather.

  • Best technique: Carolina rigs and crankbaits along creek channels for bass; minnows under floats for crappie near brush piles
  • Tip: The spring spawn draws bass into shallow flats — some of the best sight-fishing in Texas

Lake Texoma

Straddling the Texas-Oklahoma border, Lake Texoma is one of the few inland lakes in Texas with a naturally reproducing striped bass population. This makes it a unique and exciting fishery. Catfishing here is also exceptional, with blue and channel catfish growing to impressive sizes.

  • Best technique: Live shad on the main lake points and river channels for stripers; cut bait on the bottom for catfish
  • Tip: Striper guide trips are popular and highly productive during summer and winter months

Falcon Lake

Near Zapata in South Texas along the Mexican border, Falcon Lake sits in the heart of brush country and is known for producing some of the largest largemouth bass in North America. Warm winters keep fish active year-round.

  • Best technique: Big swimbaits, soft plastic creature baits, and topwater in cooler months
  • Tip: Water level fluctuations affect access and fishing quality — check conditions before making the trip

Toledo Bend Reservoir

Shared with Louisiana on the Sabine River, Toledo Bend is a massive 185,000-acre reservoir with superb bass and crappie fishing. The lake has abundant aquatic vegetation and woody cover that hold fish throughout the year.

Fishing License Requirements

Any angler 17 or older must have a valid Texas fishing license. Combination hunting and fishing licenses are available and offer good value. Licenses can be purchased through the TPWD website or at most sporting goods retailers. Special endorsements are required for trout and freshwater/saltwater combination fishing in certain zones.

No matter your skill level or target species, Texas lakes offer some of the most diverse and rewarding freshwater fishing experiences you'll find anywhere in the country.
